Cultural activists of 31 cultural organisations on Tuesday demanded the resignation of the Awami League government for killing of students and people during the quota reform movement of the student.

They also demanded the withdrawal of the ongoing curfew, stop mass arrests, and harassment in the country at a protest rally held at Noor Hossain Square at Zero Point in Gulistan area in the capital.

The event titled Pratibadi Ganer Michhil was scheduled to parade from Noor Hossain Square to Bahadur Shah Park but due to the strict position of the police, protestors stood on the Golap Shah Mazar road near Noor Hossain Square.

‘We requested the protestors to change their route because the central office of Awami League is situated on Bangabandhu Avenue, which can create an untoward situation,’ said a police official, adding that they were concerned about the safety of the protestors.

The protesters chanted different slogans against the police and the government, and a group of artists drew graffiti on the street, walls, bus and poster paper, while the police cordoned off the rally and AL activists took positions at their office corner.

Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigosthi vice-president Jamshed Anwer Tapan said that the police forcefully stopped the peaceful rally due to the security concern.

Mentioning that they demand the resignation of prime minister Sheikh Hasina, Tapan said, ‘After killing students, the government is now arresting and harassing students participated in the quota reform movement.’

‘We live in such a country where people are killed for their rights. The government has lost its moral rights to stay in power so we demand the immediate resignation of Hasina and her government,’ said Bibarton Sangskritik Kendra general secretary Mafizur Rahman Laltu.

Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigosthi general secretary Amit Ranjan Dey declared that the platform’s upcoming events would be held in front of the National Press Club on Friday.
