A two-judge High Court bench on Wednesday could not hold the scheduled hearing of a writ petition that sought the release of six coordinators of the quota reform movement from the custody of the detective branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

A Supreme Court official told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the hearing was postponed as one of the judges went on leave feeling sick.

The six students of different universities—Nahid Islam, Abu Baker Mazumdar, Asif Mahmud, Sarjis Alam, Hasnat Abdullah, and Nusrat Tabassum—were kept in the custody of the Dhaka DB after they were picked between July 26 and July 27.

Nahid’s father Badrul Islam told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Wednesday night that DB was detaining his son without any arrest for the past five days.

‘Earlier, they told us about the court’s petition. We have waited for the court’s order while the court did not hear it today. We did not visit the DB office today, and we will visit tomorrow,’ he said.

On Wednesday, the bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice SM Masud Hossain Dolon were scheduled to resume the third day’s hearing in the petition filed by two Supreme Court lawyers, Aynunnahar Siddiqua and Manzur-Al-Matin.

The hearing was adjourned on Tuesday as additional attorney general Sk Md Morshed sought time to place an argument by attorney general AM Amin Uddin on Wednesday.

The two petitioners also sought a court directive on law enforcement members to stop the use of live bullets on agitating quota reform protesters.

They sought directives on the secretaries of the law and home ministries, the chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, the inspector general of the police, the chief of the Army Staff, the chief of the Naval Staff, and the chief of the Air Force.

The bench officials informed lawyers at about 11:00am that the hearing would not be held as Justice SM Masud Hossain Dolon did not come to the court.

Later an SC official told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that Justice Masud Hossian Dolon took leave for two days starting Wednesday.

Justice Masud Hossain Dolon and Justice Md Aminul Islam, both additional High Court judges, were not regularised by the president as HC judges, according to a notification issued by the law ministry on Tuesday.

The services of the two judges, however, were extended for six months, according to the notification.

Except for the two judges, the services of nine High Court judges were regularised.
