The Bangladesh Railway on Thursday resumed train services only on short distances, about two weeks after it had stopped the services.

On the day, a total of 49 local, commuter and mail trains ran during when the curfew was relaxed, said railway officials.

Along with the passenger trains some freight trains also ran.

Passenger trains on the day ran from cities including Dhaka, Chattogram, Rajshahi, Mymensingh and Khulna.

The railway is yet to take any decision to run intercity trains on long distances.

Amid the countrywide protests seeking quota reform in government jobs, the students blocked rail tracks at Mohakhali in the capital on the afternoon of July 18, leading to the shutdown of rail communication.

The student protests saw at least 214 people killed in clashes and in the aftermath between July 16 and July 31.

The railway authorities later suspended railway services across the country for an indefinite period for the safety of the passengers as they said that the rail tracks, stations, signals, level crossing gates, rail engines and compartments were damaged during the protests.

Railway’s director traffic (commercial) Md Nahid Hasan Khan told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Thursday that they had operated 49 passenger trains across the country on the day.

‘We also ran some freight trains on different routes,’ he mentioned.

From Dhaka, Titas Commuter, Dewanganj Commuter, Jamalpur Commuter, Turag Commuter, Karnaphuli Commuter and Narayanganj Commuter ran.

Karnaphuli Commuter, Sagarika Commuter, and Nazirhat Commuter ran from Chattogram.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Rajshahi reported that rail communications from Rajshahi resumed on Thursday to a limited extent.

Abdul Karim, station manager of Rajshahi Railway Station, said that two trains – ‘Local 563’ and ‘Mahananda Express’ – left Rajshahi Railway Station for Chapainawabganj and Khulna respectively at 9:00am on Thursday.

He said that the Local 563 train had already returned to Rajshahi with passengers while the Mahananda Express would return to Rajshahi at night.

‘No decision, however, has been taken regarding the operation of the intercity trains on the long distances,’ he added.

The railways minister Md Zillul Hakim said on July 30 that local, commuter and mail trains would be operated from August 1 during when the curfew would be relaxed.

On July 24, the railway took a decision to operate trains from July 25 but backtracked from the decision same day.

The Bangladesh Railway usually daily operates about 400 passenger and freight trains, carrying around 2.5 lakh passengers, across the country.
