Protesting students of Dhaka University and Jahangirnagar University on Sunday afternoon broke into 11 residential halls, including five in DU and six in JU, which were shut on July 17 amid a police crackdown on the student movement for reforming the quota system in government jobs.
Students of both the universities left the halls after capturing photos and videos and urging students to grab halls.
Agitating DU students on Sunday entered at least five halls of the university on Sunday noon at about 3:00pm, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· DU correspondent reported.Â
The protesting students entered the halls by breaking locks of the gates.
The five halls of Dhaka University are Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall, Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Huq Hall, Salimullah Muslim Hall, Bijoy Ekattor Hall and Kabi Jasimuddin Hall.Â
But the students did not stay for a longer period of time at the halls.
On the condition of anonymity, a student said that the university administration unjustly closed their halls of residence.
They are facing difficulties in finding places to stay elsewhere in Dhaka, he said, adding that they would return to the halls very soon, even if they have to break the locks.
Earlier, when the agitators requested the DU administration to open the halls, the administration did not respond, he added.
Hall official sources told new age that the agitators first entered the hall by breaking locks of some halls, including Kabi Jasimuddin Hall.Â
After that, when other students tried to enter, the security guards opened the locks.
Professor Muhammad Biellal Hossain, provost of Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they had come to know that some protesting students broke into the hall around noon.
Later, they took some pictures there and posted them on Facebook, he added.
‘They, however, did not stay there for a long time and quickly left the hall. And as far as I know, there is no one in the hall now, and the hall gate has been locked again,’ he said.
Over a hundred agitating students, meanwhile, entered Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall, Rokeya Hall, Pritilata Hall, Sufia Kamal Hall, Bangamata Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall, and Sheikh Hasina Hall breaking locks of entrances to the halls at about 3:30pm, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in JU reported.
They were seen chanting slogans demanding the resignation of prime minister Sheikh Hasina for her alleged order for killing, attacking, and arresting students.
Earlier on Saturday, the protesters gave a 24-hour ultimatum to the government and the university administration for reopening of the halls.
Without giving further details, the president of the university’s hall provost committee, professor Sayadur Rahman, said that he was unaware of such an incident.
