Tens of thousands of people from all walks of life took to Dhaka streets on Monday defying curfew to join the March to Dhaka programme called by the Students Movement Against Discrimination demanding the resignation of prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Until submission of the report at 1:00am on Tuesday, medical sources confirmed that at least 62 people were聽 killed in violence during protests that saw the resignation of Sheikh Hasina as the prime minister.


The news of the prime minister鈥檚 resignation left people celebrating initially before things turned into chaos as many houses were set on fire or vandalised.

Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost in-charge Bacchu Mia confirmed the number of 35 deaths on the day but could not elaborate on whether they were killed before or after her resignation as prime minister.

Bachchu Mia said that families had taken away the bodies of most victims who died from bullet injuries.

Some victims have been identified as Rassel, 25, Abdur Rahman, 22, Rakib, 22, Manik Mia, 26, Saiful Islam Tonmoy, 22, Abu Isahaque, 52, and Azmot Mia, 40.

抖阴精品 staff correspondent in Sylhet reported that at least six people were killed by police firing at Baniachaung upazila in Habiganj district at about 1:00pm.

Later, agitated protesters cordoned off the police station and set it on fire.

Baniachaung upazila health complex duty doctor Shamima Akther confirmed the killing of six people.

抖阴精品 staff correspondent in Gazipur reported that at least nine people were killed in Gazipur in separate clashes between law enforcers and protesters.

At least six people were killed in a clash between BGB and protesters at Sreepur, one by police firing at Bason police station and two at Bangladesh Ansar VDP Academy.

In the final moments of the protests, at least eight people, including a child, were killed and more than 100 others injured in clashes with police in Kushtia, United News of Bangladesh reported.

The incident occurred around noon on Monday, following an attack on the Kushtia model police station and the office of the police superintendent. According to witnesses, there was a confrontation between the police and protesters at Majampur Gate. The police used tear gas and open fire to disperse the protesters.

Besides, two more policemen were killed on Monday while undergoing treatment after Sunday鈥檚 attack on the Enayetpur police station in Sirajganj.

Sunday鈥檚 deaths took toll from the recent violence to at least 365 starting from July 16.

Amid continued violence Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of prime minister in the afternoon on Sunday, ending her 15-year rule, and fled the country, reportedly to India.

The day began with tension as students announced to defy curfew and hold the March to Dhaka programme asking people to gather at designated places to press home their one-point demand for the government鈥檚 resignation.

Army personnel and members of law enforcement agencies, including police, sealed off the Shahbagh crossing, where the students were to gather.

Protesters started taking positions at the Shahbagh crossing at about 1:00pm defying the curfew and obstacles put up by members of law-enforcing agencies.

Thousands of people brought out a procession from Gazipur Chowrasta at about 11:30pm and marched to Abdullahpur, Uttara, the airport, Khilkhet, Banani, Mohakhali, and the Tejgaon area and reached the Shahbagh crossing.

A huge number of police and army personnel tried to block the procession near the Mohakhali rail crossing at about 2:15pm but the law enforcers left the spot due to the pressure of the huge crowd.

People joined the mass procession in motorbikes, battery-run-auto-rickshaws, pick-up vans, and rickshaw vans.

聽In the capital鈥檚 Matsya Bhaban area, people danced over the Army鈥簊 armoured personnel carriers amid curfew time.聽

Clashes erupted between protesters and law enforcement agencies in the capital鈥檚 Jatrabari, Old Town, Kuril Biswa Road, Natun Bazar, and Badda areas as they attempted to join the March to Dhaka programme.

Sarjis Alam, one of the coordinators of the platform, told a live programme that the police fired gunshots at their coordinators and other protesters in the Central Shaheed Minar area.

Students of different private universities, including North South University, BRAC University, United International University, and the American International University of Bangladesh, also joined the March to Dhaka programme.

抖阴精品 staff correspondent in Rajshahi reported that one student was killed as the leaders and activists of AL and its associated bodies opened fire at students during a procession in the city.

The victim is Sakib Anjum, 21, a student from the Talaimari Shaheed Minar area.

In Manikganj, a man identified as Rafiqul Islam Chanchal, 21, was hit by bullets during a protest and died at Manikganj General Hospital at noon, confirmed Amit Roy, a physician of the hospital.

The protest that demanded reform of the quota system in government jobs turned violent after the ruling Awami League鈥檚 student wing, the Bangladesh Chahatra League, attacked protesting students on the Dhaka University campus on July 15.

The all-out non-cooperation movement demanding the resignation of the government left 92 people dead in violent clashes on Sunday.
