Former army brigadier general Abdullahil Aman Azmi, the second son of late Jamaat-e-Islami leader Ghulam Azam, and Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem, the younger son of executed Jamaat-e-Islami leader Mir Quasem Ali, were released on Tuesday from a secret detention cell, also known as ‘Aynaghor.’
The two were held inside Dhaka Cantonment, allegedly by the Director General of Forces Intelligence, during the tenure of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Sanjida Islam Tulee, co-founder of ‘Mayer Daak’—a platform for the families of the victims of enforced disappearances—confirmed their release to ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.
Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem went missing from Mirpur  DOHS on August 9, 2016, and Abdullahil Aman Azmi went missing on August 23 of the same year, their families alleged.Â
Tulee said that DGFI director (admin) Azmin Tamzid assured them they would share an update on the hostages in captivity at the facility colloquially known as ‘Aynaghor’.
Tulee informed ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that she held a meeting with DGFI officials at its headquarters along with the senior human rights adviser to the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office in Bangladesh, Huma Khan, UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh, Gwyn Lewis, photojournalist Shahidul Alam, and women’s rights leader Shireen Huq.
Families of political prisoners secretly jailed in Bangladesh under the rule of Sheikh Hasina gathered in front of DGFI headquarters on Monday night and Tuesday, demanding the release of their family members.
Human Rights Watch, in its 2023 report, claimed that security forces have committed over 600 enforced disappearances since 2009.
While some people were later released, produced in court, or said to have died during gunfire exchanges with security forces, nearly 100 people were still missing, the report stated.
Meanwhile, retired army officials on Tuesday, at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity, demanded the release of everyone detained in ‘Aynaghor’ and the punishment of the officers involved.
Retired brigadier general Md Hassan Nasir, retired Lieutenant Colonel Hasinur Rahman, former ambassador Maruf Zaman, retired lieutenant colonel A Ferdous, and retired major Jamil Haider were among others present at the press conference.
