Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan’s future in the Bangladesh national team is foggy at the moment following the resignation of Sheikh Hasina from the role of prime minister and the president dissolving the Jatiya Sangsad on Tuesday.
Shakib, who had been elected as a member of parliament from the Magura-1 constituency in the 2024 national polls as a member of the then-ruling party Bangladesh Awami League, is currently in Canada, playing in the Global T20 League.
According to a Bangladesh Cricket Board official, Shakib has an NOC to play franchise leagues until August 12 and is expected to join the national team camp for the Pakistan series – set to begin on August 21 – in the following days.
However, following the change in the country’s political scene, many Awami League leaders have faced persecution across the country and Shakib himself has been subject to criticism on and off the field due to his political ties and silence during the student-led mass movement, which has created questions over his security upon returning to Bangladesh.
‘Shakib is no longer a member of the parliament. He is still a cricketer. However, there is the matter of security. He has an NOC until August 12. After that, he is expected to join the team,’ BCB Cricket Operations in-charge Shahriar Nafees told the media on Wednesday.
‘The selectors are yet to announce the team for the Pakistan series. If he is included, then the scenario will be one, and if not, then another.’
Apart from Shakib, other members of the parliament involved with cricket – former Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza and current BCB President Nazmul Hasan – had their homes wrecked in the days since Hasina’s resignation.
