
A huge number of students and ordinary people were seen controlling traffic at different places across the country, including the capital city Dhaka, for the third consecutive day on Thursday amid the absence of the traffic police on roads.
They were also seen cleaning the roads and different places and guarding different establishments across the country.
Awami League president Sheikh Hasina resigned on August 5 as prime minister of Bangladesh and fled the country, ending her 15-year rule amid an unprecedented student-led mass uprising against her authoritarian regime.
In the aftermath of the incidents, many police stations and establishments across the country came under attack and police suspended their duties.
Since August 6 no traffic police had been seen on roads in the capital as elsewhere in the country.
On August 6, Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Force members were deployed alongside army personnel to protect police stations across the country, manage Dhaka city traffic and provide security to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
The newly appointed inspector general of the police, Md Moynul Islam, on Wednesday, requested all personnel of the police to return to duty within the next 24 hours.Ìý
Since Thursday morning students, including female ones, were seen managing the traffic across the Dhaka city with a few Ansar members, Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence members, Bangladesh Scouts members, volunteers of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society and other volunteers comprising of ordinary people.
Children were also seen controlling traffic with sticks in their hands on busy roads.
Ordinary people distributed drinking water and food to the people managing traffic and even the rickshaw-pullers.
At almost all crossings in Dhaka at least 10 people were seen controlling traffic.
Shahed Islam Sajib, an undergraduate student of Habibullah Bahar College, who was controlling traffic in the High Court area at around 4:30pm, said that they, a group of at least 12 students and volunteers, had been controlling traffic since 8:00am.

‘Another group will join us at 5:00pm,’ he said.
Junayed Himel, another undergraduate student of Dhaka College from the same area, said that they would continue to control traffic until the situation of the country remained unstable.
The students were seen cleaning roads, lanes and by-lanes across the city including Dhanmondi, Green Road, Central Road areas.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Rajshahi reported that students were seen guarding the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Headquarters building on Thursday.
Amit Rudra, a member of Save Rajshahi, a platform of vigorous youths, said that they would guard the city at night.
Students were also seen controlling traffic and cleaning the city throughout the day.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Chattogram reported that for the third consecutive day students were seen controlling traffic and cleaning the roads at different places in the Chattogram city.
Students removed all political posters from the pillars of the elevated expressway in the port city.
A press release issued by the fire service media cell read that on Thursday at 227 traffic points across the country 620 firefighters controlled the traffic.
