The Bangladesh Railway is scheduled to resume intercity train services on long distances from August 15 gradually, about a month after it had stopped the services.
A press release, issued on Sunday and signed by the railway director for public relations Md Nahid Hasan Khan, also read that from August 12 freight train services and from August 13 mail, express, local and commuter train services would be resumed.
The services of Parabat Express on the Dhaka-Sylhet route and Jamalpur Express on the Dhaka-Jamalpur route will remain closed temporarily.
The advance tickets for the intercity trains can be purchased from 5:00pm today, the release added.
Amid the countrywide student protests, the students blocked rail tracks at Mohakhali in the capital in the early afternoon of July 18, leading to the shutdown of rail communications across the country.
On July 24, railways ministry officials said that train services would resume on some short-distance routes from July 25. The ministry, however, backtracked on its decision on the same night.
Railway authorities resumed services of trains on short distances from August 1.
Since August 4 the railway again halted the rail communications across the country again.
The Bangladesh Railway usually daily operates around 400 freight trains and passenger trains, carrying around 2.5 lakh passengers, across the country.聽
