The Student Movement Against Discrimination on Monday demanded trial of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who resigned and fled to India on August 5, on genocide charges for killing students and other protesters.

The student body, which led the movement that cause the fall of Hasina, at a protest rally and a protest march at Dhaka University, urged the government to file genocide cases against Hasina with the International Crimes Tribunal.

Students started gathering at the foot of the Raju Memorial Sculpture of TSC at around 4:00pm. At the rally, they also demanded a ban on student politics in educational institutions.

Coordinators of the student movement that spearheaded the mass uprising forcing Hasina’s resignation were present at this rally.

Hasnat Abdullah, one of  the key coordinators of the movement, said that their main demand was to file a case with an international tribunal against Hasina as an accused of the recent carnage and ensure justice.

Addressing the interim government’s advisers, Hasnat Abdullah said that they became advisers through the student-people’s uprising. He asked them to be cautious before making any statement, and mind the August 5 images of Ganabhaban.

Warning against the rehabilitation of murderers, Hasnat said, ‘As we removed the autocrat from power, it will not take long time to remove those attempting to rehabilitate them.’

Sarjis Alam, another coordinator of the student movement, said, ‘A certain group is still conspiring to stage a coup to nullify our revolution. We, the students and people, will not allow their plans to succeed.’

Ducsu’s former social service secretary Akhter Hossen said that they would use all their strength to thwart all of Hasina’s conspiracies.

‘The defeated Awami League is employing various tactics. But we, the students and people, will not allow any coup plan set for August 15 to succeed,’ he said.

During the protest, students were chanting slogans, such as ‘We demand justice, bring killer Hasina to justice,’ and ‘There will be no place for corrupt politics on this campus’.

Before the rally, processions of students from different halls of the university gathered at the foot of the Raju Memorial Sculpture.

In Rajshahi, about one thousand teachers and students of different educational institutions brought out a protest procession from in front of Rajshahi University’s Kazla Gate at 7:30pm, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· staff correspondent in the city reported on Monday.

The demonstrators marched to Kumarpara area in Rajshahi city where they held a brief rally, demanding capital punishment for the immediate past prime minister Sheikh Hasina for her role in killing students and people during the students protests.

The students also protested at interim government’s home affairs adviser brigadier general (retd) M Sakhawat Hossain’s statement over allowing Awami League to be organised and Sheikh Hasina to take part in the next election.

Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and fled the country amid the mass uprising led by the student protesters, bringing an end to her 15-year long rule.
