
Students under the Student Movement Against Discrimination platform on Wednesday demanded speedy trial of ousted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and others involved over the killings carried out during the mass uprising led by students.
Students across the country held demonstrations as part of the weeklong ‘Resistance Week’ programme to press home their four-point demand.Â
Students and people from different walks of life gathered at Shahbagh crossing in the afternoon at a rally on the second day of the programme.
Abu Baker Majumder, a coordinator of the platform, said that students would not let the blood of students and people go in vain.
He also demanded justice for the killings during the movement.
One of the key coordinators of the movement Sarjis Alam said that the movement against Hasina’s fascism did not end yet.
He called on the students and people to remain ever ready to take to the streets anytime till the voting rights of people are ensured.
Hasnat Abdullah, another coordinator of the platform, said that protesting students were attacked and repressed by Hasina’s fascist government and law enforcers.
He mentioned that Awami League leaders were plotting in the name of communal violence to destroy the achievements of the student-led mass uprising that forced Hasina to resign and flee to India.
‘Students are ready to fight against any conspiracy,’ said Hasnat.
Rafiqul Islam, an associate professor of Dhaka University, said, ‘There has never been any division between Muslims and Hindus in this country and it will never happen.’
Student leaders, including, Akhter Hossain, Ali Ahsan Junayed, Ronesh Chandra Roy Shahosh, Bin Yamin Mollah, among others, also spoke at the rally expressing solidarity.
Following the rally, they marched towards the Science Laboratory crossing to Rapa Plaza in Dhanmondi.
The participants chanted slogans seeking the death penalty for Hasina for ordering the killing of students and common people.
They lit candles there to pay tribute to the students and people killed during the mass uprising.
Students of different educational institutions, including Dhaka University, Sonargaon University, University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh, Uttara Town College, Eden College, Dhaka College, Bangladesh University of Professionals, and Ideal College, were present at the programme.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· staff correspondent in Rajshahi reported that several hundred students of various educational institutions staged demonstrations in Rajshahi city.
The students first staged a demonstration for 30 minutes at the Talaimari crossing and later marched to Binodpur Bazar with a protest procession, where they held a short rally.
Golam Kibria Meshkat Chowdhury, one of the central coordinators of the movement, said that students would not leave the streets until the state was properly reformed.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Barishal reported that students of Barisal University also held a protest march and rally, demanding justice for the attack on university student Jannatul Naureen Urmi.Â
The students said that Awami League supported teachers and its student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League brutally attacked Urmi in 2020, but justice was not served yet.
The platform on Tuesday launched the weeklong ‘Resistance Week’ programme to press home four-point demand, including the formation of a special tribunal to ensure a speedy trial for murders committed by Hasina and her government using fascist establishments; and trial of those who participated in the killings, robbery, and looting perpetrated against religious minorities as was planned by the Awami League and its grand alliance partners.
Their other demands are—removal and immediate trial of those officials in the administration and judiciary who had legitimised attacks, lawsuits, and killings during the student movement and repeatedly attempted to establish fascism; and equal opportunities for those who had been subjected to discrimination in the administration and judiciary.
