The interim government’s road transport and bridges adviser, Muhammad Fauzul Kabir Khan, said on Sunday that services of metro rail in the capital would be resumed within a week.

Corruption must be prevented for changing the idea about the ministry while transparency and accountability must also be established, he added.

He said these at an opinion sharing meeting with the officials of the ministry on the first day of the adviser at his office in the ministry.

Earlier, the authorities backtracked on a decision to resume the services of metro rail from Saturday.

The authorities concerned claimed that for unavoidable reasons they could not start the trial run of trains before resuming the main services.

Around 700 metro rail employees of the metro rail implementing agency Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited, however, are observing a strike demanding elimination of injustice and discrimination in their jobs, including upgradation of their pay scales.

The adviser also said that the students sacrificed themselves for everyone’s rights and equal opportunities in every sector.

By preventing corruption in the ministry the debt of the students’ blood has to be paid off, he continued.

He also said that as this government was meant for all, development would not only take place in the Dhaka city but also in places where the movement of people was higher and in places which were underprivileged.

Mentioning the high cost of the country’s roads, he directed all to reduce expenditure in all works by maintaining quality and stopping the single-source procurement process.

About the tender process, Fauzul Kabir Khan said that transparency in the tender process should be ensured by letting the best ones to get the tenders instead of favouring some people.

He further said that on main roads in the Dhaka city there were no spaces for parking and urged the authorities concerned to look into the matter.

About the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority services, the adviser said that he was also one of the sufferers.
