About 200 shop employees of Bashundhara City Shopping Mall on Monday in front of the complex staged demonstration demanding 10-hour working day and government holidays.

They also demanded the removal of the shopping mall in-charge Mohsinul Karim, terming him as ‘autocrat’.

The protest continued for about seven hours in presence of members of the army and Border Guard of Bangladesh.

Md Hridoy, an employee in the level-2, said that they wanted their working hours would be from 10:00am to 8:00pm, instead of the current 10:00am to 10:00pm.

‘We are now working 12 hours against the international eight hours standard. We want our duty will be set at 10 hours,’ he said, adding that they did not even get holidays, including the May Day, the International Workers’ Day.

Rimi Saha, another employee at Level-4, said that they took to the streets for the removal of shopping mall in-charge Karim.

‘We want all government and international holidays,’ she said, adding that they had ended their protest at about 7:00pm as a team went to meet the authorities concerned.

Bashundhara Group media adviser Mohammad Abu Tayeb told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that if the allegations against security in-charge Karim proved, he would be withdrawn from the shopping mall.

‘We have sold shops to the shop owners.  The decision will be taken by shop owners’ association,’ he added.
