
A youth organisation, Juba Bengali, on Monday demanded justice for those killed, including its central organiser Asif Iqbal, during student protests seeking quota reform in the government jobs.聽
In a statement, the organisation demanded fair investigations and justice as well as immediate measures to ensure proper treatment and rehabilitation for the injured.聽
The statement noted that its organisers, led by organising secretary Syed Shadhin, participated in the quota reform movement in the capital鈥檚 Mirpur-10 area.聽
On July 19, Asif Iqbal was shot in the area and taken to Al Helal Hospital in Mirpur, where the duty doctors refused to provide treatment. He was subsequently taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
Asif, a former student of the Independent University, worked as foremost coordinators during the 2018 Road Safety Movement while studying there. He was buried in his hometown Magura.
Despite a month passing since the incident, no case has been filed and no visible steps have been taken to bring the accused to justice, leaving the country鈥檚 people disheartened, the statement read.聽聽
A preliminary report of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights released on August 16 says that about 650 people were killed and thousands of protesters and bystanders have been injured during the student protests from July 16 to August 11.
