Today is the 88th anniversary of the birth of fiction writer and journalist Dilara Hashem.

Born in Jashore on August 21, 1936, Dilara Hashem obtained a master’s degree in English literature from Dhaka University.


She worked in the Bangla section of the Voice of America in 1976 and retired in 2011. She also worked at Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar.

A well-known fiction writer, Dilara Hashem’s debut novel ‘Ghar Man Janala’ was published in 1965, which was also adapted into a film in 1973.

Her literary works include ‘Ekada Ebang Ananta’, ‘Stabdhatar Kane Kane’, ‘Amlakir Mou’, ‘Badami Bikeler Galpa’, ‘Kaktaliya’, ‘Shangkha Karat’, ‘Anukta Padabali’, ‘Sadar Andar’ and ‘Setu’.

For her contribution to literature, she received the Bangla Academy Literary Award, Shangkhachil Sahitya Puraskar and Chicago Sahitya Puraskar.

Dilara Hashem passed away in Maryland in the United States on March 19, 2022.
