The Human Rights Support Society, a non-government human rights organisation, said in a report that at least 819 people were killed during student protests and its aftermath across the country between July 16 and August 18.

According to the report, 311 were killed between July 16 to August 3 while 508 were killed between August 4 to August 18 and at least 25,000 people were injured mostly by bullets, rubber bullets, tear gas and pellets during the violence.   


The uprising led to the ouster of long-time ruler Sheikh Hasina, who resigned on August 5 and fled to India.

Md Saiful Islam, research officer of HRSS, presented the report at a press conference held at the National Press Club on Tuesday.

HRSS found the identities of 630 people, but identities of 189 people could not be known.

The available information showed that 455 were killed being hit by bullet, 79 were burnt to death, 78 were beaten to death, 10 were hacked to death and 24 died for other causes.

The report observed that law enforcers used rubber bullets, lobbed tear gas, as well as lethal shotguns and shot from helicopters to quell the movement.   

As per the age-related information of 470 people, there were 83 children below the age of 18 while 240 people aged between 18 and 30, 126 people aged between 30 and 50 and 21 people aged above 50.

The available professional information of 293 victims showed that there were 144 students, 57 labourers, 51 law enforcers, 5 journalists and 35 people of different other professions.

HRSS collected the death information of 819 victims from the victims’ families, witnesses, hospitals and daily newspapers. The organisation said that the death toll could reach 1,000.

The report demanded that the government and the authorities concerned make and publish a complete list of victims killed in the movement.

In addition to ensuring justice for the victims, the report also demanded formation of a commission to compensate the victims.   

HRSS adviser Nur Khan Liton, its executive director Ijajul Islam, vice-chairman Saifuddin Ahmed and programme officer Saneequdrat Saqee, among others, were present at the press conference, said a press release.
