The Bangladesh Railway on Thursday cancelled journeys of 26 trains fully and that of five others partially from Chattogram and Sylhet for different destinations of Bangladesh, following the bending of rail tracks and washout of stones due to flood.

The trains were cancelled after the train services between Chattogram, Sylhet and rest of Bangladesh remained suspended since Thursday afternoon as flood water submerged the tracks in Feni.

Bangladesh Railway’s Chattogram divisional manager Saiful Islam told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they had stopped running of all trains from Chattogram and Sylhet at about 12:30pm on Thursday.

‘The flood water submerged tracks in Fazilpur area in Feni today,’ he said, adding, ‘following that, we stopped all train movement to and from Chattogram and Sylhet.’

A press release issued by the railway read that journeys of 26 trains on Dhaka-Chattogram, Dhaka-Sylhet, Chattogram-Sylhet, Chattogram-Chandpur, Chattogram-Jamalpur, Cox’s Bazar-Dhaka, and Chattogram-Bhuapur were fully cancelled.

Journeys of five trains on Cumilla-Chattogram, Srimangal-Chattogram, Gunbati-Chattogram, and Chattogram-Akhaura were cancelled after these were returned to the source stations after beginning their journeys, the release said.

The release added that the decision was taken as rail tracks bended on Fazilpur-Kalidah and Chattogram-Nazirhat-Dohazari-Cox’s Bazar sections after stones were washed out due to flood.

Devastating flash floods are raging through nine districts in eastern, southeastern and northeastern Bangladesh.

Triggered by days of extremely heavy rains, particularly in the upstream Indian state of Tripura, the flash flooding impacts were compounded, particularly for Cumilla, by India reportedly releasing water from the Dumboor hydroelectric project in the Gumati River basin.
