
Business leaders on Thursday sought support from the Bangladesh Army for preventing extortion and enhanced security for industrial and commercial establishments to ensure an uninterrupted supply chain.
They made the urge at a meeting with the chief of army staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman at the army headquarters in the capital Dhaka.
‘We have requested the army chief to enhance security of industrial and commercial establishments to foster a business-friendly environment in the country,’ Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry president Mahbubul Alam told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· following the meeting.
He said that the army along with other law enforcement agencies had already implemented measures to maintain the operational status of industrial production.
Businesses have called for strict action against extortion, which has recently been occurring in several areas, the FBCCI president said.
According to Mahbub, the Army chief assured the business leaders that the army would continue to fulfil its responsibility to ensure the safety of all citizens, including the business community.
In the meeting, Waker-Uz-Zaman said that the Bangladesh Army was committed to ensuring that both local and foreign investors could conduct their commercial activities smoothly by protecting industrial establishments, supply chains and ports.
Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association’s acting president Khandoker Rafiqul Islam told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they sought a message from the army chief for the global buyers so that they could gain confidence over the future business with Bangladesh.
In response, the army chief assured that if the BGMEA arranges a meeting with the global buyers, he would be on board, the BGMEA president said.
General Waqar-uz-Zaman also urged the business community to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in the event of any threats to industrial establishments.
Among others, the meeting was attended by former FBCCI presidents Abdul Awal Mintu, Mir Nasir Hossain, AK Azad and Md Jashim Uddin, Square Pharmaceuticals managing director Tapan Chowdhury, Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Ashraf Ahmed and Standard Chartered Bank Bangladesh CEO Naser Ejaz Bijoy.
