Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, a retired judge to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, was admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital in a serious condition on Saturday night.

Deputy inspector general of prisons in the Sylhet division, Md Sagir Mia, confirmed the matter to ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.


Earlier in the day, retired Justice Shamsuddin was sent to jail in a case.

The judicial magistrate court-1 in Sylhet on Saturday afternoon asked the authorities concerned to ensure proper medical treatment of former Justice Manik as he was ill, the official said.

The DIG said that Justice Manik underwent a medical check-up after he had been shifted to the jail from the court.

Later, he was hospitalised at about 11:30pm as his physical condition deteriorated, the official added.

‘A testicle of Justice Manik has ruptured due to beating. Emergency surgery has already been conducted on his body early Sunday,’ Sagir Mia said on Sunday afternoon.

He added that Justice Shamsuddin was kept under close observation of physicians at the intensive care unit at the hospital.

An attending doctor of the ICU told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that marks of injuries were found on the former Justice’s body.

‘Beating caused internal bleeding in his body,’ he said, adding that more time is needed to comment on the patient’s condition.

A relative of former Justice Manik told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Sunday that they visited him in the morning.

‘He is undergoing treatment. His physical condition is improving slowly and better treatment is needed for his recovery,’ he said.

On Saturday afternoon, Sylhet judicial magistrate Alamgir Hossain passed an order asking the authorities to send the former Justice to jail after police produced him before the court showing him arrested under section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Witnesses said that many people were seen trying to attack former Justice Manik and they also humiliated him by throwing eggs and shoes at him when he was being taken to the district judicial court on Saturday afternoon.

Earlier on Friday night, a patrol team of the Border Guard Bangladesh arrested Justice Manik while he was allegedly fleeing the country through the Dona border at Kanighat upazila in Sylhet, police said.

Kanaighat police station officer-in-charge Zahangir Hossain Sarder told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the BGB handed him over to the police early Saturday.

He told that the retired judge was accused in a case filed with a court in Dhaka.

Manik retired as a judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court in 2015.
