Rohingyas on Sunday sought the assistance of the interim government for their safe return to Myanmar as they observed the seventh anniversary of the exodus of the displaced people from the Rakhine state of the bordering country.
Thousands of Rohingyas joined the ‘Hope is Home’ campaign and gathered in open fields at different camps in Teknaf and Ukhia in Cox’s Bazar.
In addition to men, Rohingya women and children also participated in the gathering at Ukhia, raising their five-point charter of demands to go back to their homeland with rights as citizens of Myanmar.
They held posters and placards with the slogan ‘We Want Justice’.
They demanded an end to all kinds of genocide, violence and attacks on the Rohingyas in the Rakhine State, expeditious repatriation of all forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals by ensuring their citizenship, holding the Myanmar government and security forces accountable for human rights violations and crimes against the Rohingyas.
They also demanded practical action from United Nations agencies for sustainable repatriation to Myanmar.
They said that Rohingyas wanted to return to their motherland Myanmar and did not want to live such a stateless and inhumane life in refugee camps.
Hamid Hossain, the community leader of Ukhia Kutupalong Rohingya camp 1, said they sought cooperation from the interim government to ensure their repatriation.
Rohingya leades Syed Ullah, Rahmat Ullah, Abdur Rashid and Muhammad Musa spoke at the rally.
