The young professionals who acted behind the recent student-led mass uprising have resolved to form a Citizens Committee with a view to upholding the democratic spirit of the uprising in running the affairs of the state and working for forging a new political settlement in the society.
They made the decision at a meeting held at Dhaka University on August 23, a press release said Monday.
After the fall of fascist regime of Sheikh Hasina through the student-led mass uprising, the discussion meeting was organised with the aim of keeping the people united, cooperating with the interim government formed through the mass uprising, ensuring the accountability of the government and aiding the government in formulating policies in public interest, said the release.
Representatives of the young generation organised the discussion at the IBA building of
Dhaka University as a part of their civic responsibility, it said.
‘A popular uprising against the fascist regime has taken place under the leadership of the Student Movement Against Discrimination with the participation of people from all walks of life. We have been freed through the sacrifice of thousands of martyrs and injured students,’ it said, adding that a people’s government was established through a popular uprising.
‘But the declared goal of the mass uprising — the abolition of the fascist system and the establishment of a new political system — still demands a long political and policy-making struggle,’ it said.
The allies and aides of fascism are still prevailing in different parts of the state mechanism and governance structure, said the release.
‘People are still witnessing the evils of the fascist system. On the other hand, there has been a lack of progress in the restructuring of state institutions, policies sensitive to public interest, and the proper prosecution of mass murderers as prerequisites for a new political settlement,’ it said.
‘Through the revolution, we have gained the potential of a new political language and population. We have to work to turn that potential into reality in order to establish a new Bangladesh through this newly formed political population,’ it said.
The meeting decided to form a Citizen Committee based on the opinion of the guests who attended the meeting, the press release said, adding that this committee would ensure urgent reforms and restructuring of the state uniting the people with the spirits of the mass upraising.
The meeting also discussed few courses of action, including keeping alive the democratic spirits of the martyrs and injured people, working for the expansion of the committee to cities, districts and upazilas, integrating social, cultural and religious leaderships at all levels in a coordinated manner, conducting review and making recommendations for the formulation of state policies as per the intent of the ‘people’s revolution’, mobilising public opinions for forming a Constituent Assembly to frame a new constitution, said the release.
The representatives of the meeting were including —Asaduzzaman, Mamun Abdullahi, Ershadul Bari Khandkar, Syed Hasan Imtiaz, Monika Yasmin, Faisal Mahmud Shanto, Sarwar Tushar, Ataullah, Alauddin Mohammad and Asif Twasin.
