Hundreds of India visa applicants staged demonstrations at the Indian Visa Application Centres in Dhaka and Satkhira on Monday, voicing their anger over delays and alleged harassment in obtaining visas.

In Dhaka, hundreds of people seeking Indian visa staged a demonstration at the Indian Visa Application Centre at the Jamuna Future Park in the capital.

Vatara Police Station officer-in-charge Mazharul Islam told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the demonstration started at about 10:30 am.

‘The police and the army members were present at the spot. The situation came under control at about 1:00pm,’ he said.

Nothing serious had occurred during the demonstartion, added the police official.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Satkhira reported that visa applicants staged a protest at the Indian Visa Application Centre in the district.

Protesters alleged that they did not receive their visas despite waiting for several months.

Expressing frustration, resident of Satkhira’s Munjitpur, Mostafa Ali, said that the application fee was Tk 875, and it often took two to three months while the visa was supposed to be issued within 15 days.

‘They do not grant the visa after 2-3 months and withhold the passports, which are not acceptable,’ he said, adding that he had the urgency for a visa for travelling to India for medical treatment.

Authorities have promised to report the issue to higher officials in hopes of calming the situation.

Satkhira Sadar police station officer-in-charge Rafiqul Islam said that police were sent to manage the situation at the visa centre in Itagachha.

‘Some passports have been returned, and the remaining applicants have been assured that their concerns will be reported to the Indian High Commission in Dhaka,’ he added.

On August 7, the Indian Visa Application Centre’s website announced that all centres would remain closed indefinitely due to unrest amid Sheikh Hasina’s fall on August 5.

After almost a week, the visa centre in Dhaka resumed limited operations.
