A section of jewellers on Wednesday demanded disbanding of the current board of directors of the Bangladesh Jewellers Association and the appointment of an administrator.
At a press conference held at Baitul Mukarram Market in the city, former Bajus president Enamul Haque Khan and former general secretary Dilip Kumar Agarwala alleged that Bashundhara Group managing director Sayem Sobhan Anvir had unilaterally declared himself president of the association without any competition, using his residence as an election office.
Former Bajus president Enamul claimed that Anvir formed an election commission violating the association’s constitution and principles.
After declaring himself president of Bajus, Anvir has been frequently raising gold prices illegally to sell gold from Bashundhara Refinery at higher rates, he claimed.
Enamul also accused Anvir of using the association for corrupt practices, alleging that he exploited his position to engage in unethical activities for personal gain.
‘We call on the interim government to dissolve the current Bajus committee and appoint an administrator to safeguard this promising sector from ‘mafia’ influence and to keep gold prices affordable for the public,’ he said.
Enamul also urged the government to support the organization for holding an inclusive election for the association at the earliest opportunity.
Meanwhile, in a press release issued on 27 August, Bajus general secretary Badal Chandra Roy said that members of the association’s remained united under the leadership of its president Sayem Sobhan Anvir.
He alleged that a vested interest group was conspiring to damage the reputation of Bajus and urged all to remain vigilant.
