The National Museum of Science and Technology director general Muhammad Munir Chowdhury on Wednesday urged the civil service officials to build a corruption-free country.

He made the call at the Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre in Savar.

Mentioning that many young officers are also getting involved in corruption, he said, ‘An idea has become deep-seated in the public mind that the government offices are the arena of corruption, government employees are corrupt.’

Corruption is accepted in order to maintain one’s post and to keep the path of future promotion unhindered and thus the administrative machinery has lost its strength, he added.

Urging the official to free her or his office from the ring of corruption, he said, ‘Why should the government office have to bear the expenses from the contractor, from the brickyard, from the license, from the lease of government assets?’

He also raised the question that why the district administration should bear the cost of entertaining the guests.

‘Decade after decade, the culture of injustice and corruption has spread and now it has become a luxury,’ he said, adding that  the BCS officials should not sit on the chair but frequently visit the field and subordinate offices to uproot the roots of corruption.

Even if a senior officer gives an unjust order, the junior officer is not legally bound to obey it, he pointed out, adding that petty corruption led to huge corruption and corruption.

The strength of integrity of young officers should put the present fragile administration on a strong footing, he urged.
