The interim government is set to launch joint drives on September 4 to recover illegal firearms across the country.

Home adviser retired Lieutenant General Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury made the announcement on Sunday, said a home ministry press release.


Earlier, the interim government suspended the licences of firearms issued to civilians during the 15 years of the Awami League regime.

A government notification, signed by Md Zahirul Haque, senior assistant聽 secretary, Public Security Division, Ministry of Home Affairs, said that the firearms licences issued to civilians between January 6, 2009 and August 5, 2024 would remain suspended.

It directed the licence holders to submit their ammunition and firearms to the police stations concerned by September 3.

Besides, the police headquarters in a directive, issued on September 1, said that looted arms and ammunition of the police must be returned to police headquarters by September 3.

The police have recovered 3,880 weapons of various types, which were looted from police stations and offices across Bangladesh during the violence after former prime minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to India on August 5.

PHQ made the announcement in a press release on Sunday.

Besides, 2,86,353 rounds of bullets, 22,201 teargas shells, and 2,139 sound grenades were also recovered so far, the release said.

Many police stations and offices were attacked and looted across the country during the student protests as police opened fire on protesters indiscriminately, killing many protesters.

Over 650 people including children, students and police officers were killed since July 16 during the protests demanding quota reform in government jobs that eventually forced Sheikh Hasina to flee.
