
At least 11 people were killed and 34 others injured in separate road accidents in Gopalganj, Narsingdi, Nilphamari and Madaripur between Saturday night and Sunday.
In Gopalganj, six people, including a woman, were killed and 15 others injured as a passenger bus collided head-on with a truck and plunged into a roadside ditch on the Dhaka-Khulna Highway at about 7.40am Sunday morning, reported Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha.
The deceased are Saidur Rahman, 44, of Town Noapara village and Sagor Mollah, 24, of Sarulia village in Bagerhat, Jamshed Ali, 31, of Satali village in Satkhira Sadar upazila, Rois Sheikh, 24, of Sultanshahi village in Gopalganj Sadar upazila, Rakib Sheikh, 17, of Putimari village in Kalia upazila of Narail and Tania Afroz Tahura, 30, wife of Abul Hasan of Tutpara in Khulna.
Kashiani Thana sub-inspector Mohammad Selim Miah said that the Dhaka-bound passenger bus, coming from Khulna, collided with a speeding truck, coming from the opposite direction, near Majhigati bus stand area, leaving six people dead on the spot and injuring 15 others.
‘The injured have been taken to upazila health complexes in Kashiani, and Muksudpur and Khulna Medical College Hospital for treatment,’ he added.
On information, Bhanga Thana police and a team of fire service and civil defence rushed to the spot, rescued the injured and recovered the bodies, Bhatiapara fire station assistant officer Md Rezaul Mawla told media.
According to another BSS report, at least four people, including women and children, were killed and another four injured in a road accident in Narsingdi Saturday night.
The accident took place when a microbus collided head-on a covered van in Dagirya area of Sadar upazila on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at about 9.30pm, Narsingdi fire service station officer Md Raihan confirmed.
The deceased are Kamrun Nahar, 35, Tanzina, 24, Sabiha, 14, and Sazit, 12, of Raypura upazila of the district.,
According to the deceased family sources, all of them were returning home from Mirpur of Dhaka.
A toddler was killed as a battery run van hit him in Dimla upazila of Nilphamari on Sunday, BSS reported.
The toddler is two and half a years old Abdullah, of Dakhin Titpara Khalua Para area in the upazila.
Local people said that the accident occurred at about 8:00am in the area while Abdullah crossing road with his father Hossain Ali. He died on the spot.
Confirming the matter, officer-in-charge of Dimla Thana Debasish Rai said that a case was filed in this regard.
Fifteen people, including two drivers, were injured in a head-on collision between two buses in Rajoir upazila of Madaripur Sunday noon, said another BSS report.
The accident occurred at about 12:30pm in the Baro Bridge area on Dhaka-Barisal Highway.
Being informed, firefighters rushed to the spot and took the injured to Rajoir upazila health complex.
Rajoir Thana OC Md Asaduzzaman said that police were working to tackle the traffic congestion on the highway.
