Students of the University of Dhaka on Monday staged a human chain at the Anti-Violence Raju Memorial Sculpture on the university, demanding the immediate issuance of the notifications for the appointment of pro vice-chancellors for education and administration.
Students from different departments joined the human chain, and also submitted a memorandum to the DU vice-chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan.
In the memorandum, the students said that they read in the newspapers that the applied chemistry and chemical engineering department professor Mohammad Ismail and economics department professor Sayema Haque Bidisha from were appointed as new pro-VCs.
‘While all other appointment notifications of the DU have already been issued, the notifications for the appointments of pro-VCs remain mysteriously stalled,’ they said.
Abdul Majid, a social welfare department student, alleged that a certain group was intentionally delaying the appointment of pro-vice-chancellors to bring back their party politics.
‘The two pro-VCs have been chosen and their appointments should be formalised. The administrative gridlock at DU must end now,’ he added.Â
Moderated by international relations department student Mohammad Imran, English department’s Mohammad Raihan, Islamic history department’s Nazmus Kayes Siam, international relations department’s Iqbal Haider, among others, spoke at the human chain.
