
Politicians, academics and professionals on Tuesday at a commemoration meeting in Dhaka said that Sheikh Muhammad Shaheedullah was a man who led movements for saving national wealth.
They also said that now the youths should follow his ideals for development and saving national wealth of the country.
National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports organised the citizens’ commemoration meeting of Sheikh Muhammad Shaheedullah, the founding convener of the national committee at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh auditorium.
Shaheedullah died in the United States on August 9 this year suffering from old age complications.
Dhaka University emeritus Professor Serajul Islam Choudhury said that Sheikh Muhammad Shaheedullah was a true patriot who wanted to establish a repression and oppression free society.
He also led countrywide movements for saving the national wealth and using the wealth for the development of the country, Serajul Islam said.
He called on the youths to follow ideals of Shaheedullah for development of the country in the changed political situation.
Former member secretary to the national committee and former professor of Jahangirnagar University economist Anu Muhammad said that Shaheedullah founded the National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports in 1986 for protecting the national resources from the hands of imperialism and grabbers.
He called on the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus to withdraw all the cases filed against the leaders and activists of the national committee during Phulbari movements to save Phulbari Coal Mine from the hands of Asia Energy.
Former Dhaka University professor Akmol Hossain called on the left parties to continue their movements against imperialist America.
Former president of Communist Party of Bangladesh Mujahidul Islam Selim said that we should follow ideas of Shaheedullah still for saving national wealth from the hands of imperialism.
Adviser to the Socialist Party of Bangladesh Khalequzzaman called on all the left and democratic parties to be united to save the national wealth of the country and to continue movements of the national committee.
Revolutionary Workers Party general secretary Saiful Huq said, ‘After victory of the Student Movement Against Discrimination platform we could ensure good governance in the country.’
Gasosamhati Andolan chief coordinator Zonayed Saki said that Shaheedullah continued his lifelong movements against misrule and imperialism.
SM Shahik Mahmud Roni, the youngest son of Shaheedullah, said that his father died at his USA residence on August 9 at the age of 93.
Chaired by founding member secretary of the national committee and former Dhaka University professor MM Akash, architect Iqbal Habib, left politicians Subhrangshu Chakrobortty, Ikbal Kabir Jahid, Masud Rana, Mushrefa Mishu and others spoke at the commemoration meeting.
Artists of Bibartan Sanskritik Kenrda rendered patriotic songs and a documentary on the life of Shaheedullah was also shown.
