The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Wednesday demanded immediate reconstitution of the Election Commission and the Anti-Corruption Commission.
BNP standing committee member AZM Zahid Hossain made the demand at a press conference at the party’s Naya Paltan central office in Dhaka.
The party’s Relief Collection Committee organised the press conference.
Zahid said that it was now very urgent to reorganise the EC and the ACC as the beneficiaries of the previous government were in place in these two institutions.
‘It is the responsibility of the interim government to weed out all these beneficiaries. This government is the product of the student-people movement...They will do their duty properly,’ he added.
Alleging that the EC formed during Sheikh Hasina’s regime was their instigator, he said, ‘This fake Election Commission is among those who have contributed the most to making the previous regime of this country mature.’
‘They are a commission of slaves. Though the fascist government fell, the Election Commission formed by them is still working,’ he said.
Zahid said that the present commission was sitting shamelessly till today, though they conducted January 7 ‘Dummy’ election.
Actually, three consecutive commissions disgraced the EC, he said, and added that the previous commission did votes at the night before the polling day and its earlier commission made lawmakers without voting.
‘I think, the present Election Commission should understand the fact. This government should ensure their resignation to avoid the wrath of the people, and give a chance to form a new Election Commission. Otherwise, no one will be safe from public outrage,’ he said.
Criticizing the ACC, he said, ‘All the commissioners and officers at the ACC who are still sitting are beneficiaries of the previous government…It is very urgent to reorganise the ACC.’
BNP chairperson’s advisory council member Abdus Salam and the party’s joint secretary general Abdus Salam Azad, among others, were also present.
