The Anti-Corruption Commission has sent a letter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs seeking information about 38 officials and employees of Bangladesh embassies in 10 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada, over allegations of abuse of power and embezzlement of public money.

The ACC sent the letter signed by its deputy director Syed Nazrul Islam to the foreign ministry from the ACC’s integrated district office in Dhaka-1 on Tuesday, said ACC officials.

Foreign affairs adviser, Mohammad Touhid Hossain, at a press briefing at his ministry office on Wednesday, however, said that there might be some misunderstandings in this regard as ‘audit objections’ were often seen as ‘corruptions’.

‘From the nature of the complaints, it seems to me that many of them are the results of audit objections. But, audit objection and corruption are not the same,’ he said, and added that they would cooperate with the ACC in the inquiry.

The commission is conducting an inquiry over allegations of irregularities and corruption against the 38 officials and employees of foreign ministry.

ACC sent the letter on Tuesday seeking information regarding ambassadors, heads of chancery, and consular chief officers working in Bangladesh embassies in 10 countries, including the USA, the UK, Canada, Saudi Arabia, China, Dubai, Italy, Switzerland, and the Philippines.

ACC requested the ministry to provide the current workplace, title, permanent address, and current address of these officials by September 10 for the sake of a fair inquiry.
