The government on Thursday appointed professor SMA Faiz, also a former vice-chancellor of Dhaka University and former chairman of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission, as chairman to the University Grants Commission.

Same day the government appointed vice-chancellors to five public universities across the country.


The universities are – Jahangirnagar University, Rajshahi University, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Khulna University of Engineering and Technology and Noakhali Science and Technology University.

Among these universities, the vice-chancellors to Jahangirnagar University and Rajshahi University have been appointed on a temporary basis.

The education ministry on the day issued six separate circulars in these regards.

An education ministry circular read that following the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh Order 1973’s section 4 professor SMA Faiz, a former professor of soil, water and environment department of Dhaka University, also a former vice-chancellor of Dhaka University and former chairman of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission, was appointed as chairman to the University Grants Commission following three conditions.

The conditions are the duration of his appointment will be four years, for the post he will get salary and other benefits as per the rules and his appointment will be in effect from the day of his joining.

Philosophy professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan at Jahangirnagar University was appointed as the vice-chancellor to the university on a temporary basis following the Jahangirnagar University Act 1973 and five other conditions.

The conditions are his appointment will be in effect from the day of his joining, for the post he will get salary and other benefits as per his present post, he will get other facilities as per the rules, he will stay on the campus always as the chief executive officer and the president and chancellor can cancel this appointment anytime if necessary.

With same conditions, physics professor Saleh Hasan Naqib at Rajshahi University, was appointed as the vice-chancellor to the university on a temporary basis following the Rajshahi University Act 1973.

Entomology professor Md Abdul Latif at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University was appointed as the vice-chancellor to the university following the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Act 2001 and five other conditions.

Following the Khulna University of Engineering and Technology Act 2003, the university’s mechanical engineering professor Muhammad Masud has been appointed as the vice-chancellor to the university and following the Noakhali University of Engineering and Technology Act 2001, Dhaka University’s applied chemistry and chemical engineering department professor Mohammad Ismail has been appointed as the vice-chancellor to the Noakhali university.

The vice-chancellors of these three universities have been appointed for the next four years.
