
A Rajshahi court has sentenced a local leader of Awami League to life term imprisonment for killing a leader of the party’s student front Bangladesh Chhatra League two years back.
The convict is Muhammad Asaduzzaman, former chairman of Naldanga upazila parishad in Natore and president of AL’s upazila committee.
Judge of Rajshahi divisional speedy trial tribunal Muhammad Mohiduzzaman on Thursday also fined him Tk 10,000, in default, he has to suffer one year more in jail.
According to the prosecution, the convict along with his two brothers beat Zamiul Alim, assistant general secretary of Naldanga upazila unit BCL, and his father Farhad Shah, residents of Ramsha Kazipur village under the upazila, indiscriminately during an arbitration meeting in Amtali Bazar area on September 19, 2022, leaving them critically injured.
Later, Zamiul died to his injuries at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital on September 23.
Zahanara Begum, mother of the deceased, lodged a murder case with Naldanga police station on the same day accusing three persons.
Police submitted charge sheet against them on January 31, 2024.
The court, however, acquitted brothers of the convict – Faisal Shah and Alim Al Razi as charges brought against them could not be proved.
