The state-owned National Tea Company Ltd workers in Moulvibazar demonstrated on Friday at some of the gardens, demanding arrears.

The workers of Madanmohanpur, Champaray, Baghachhara and Padmachhara tea gardens of Kamalganj observed strike from 10:00am to 11:30am to press home their demands.

About 1,500 tea workers working in four gardens participated in the protest.

On Thursday, the workers of Madanmohanpur, Madhabpur and Patrakhola tea plantations of Madhabpur union of the upazila also demonstrated to pay their weekly wages and allowances.

Workers in Kamalganj tea plantation owned by National Tea Company did not receive their weekly wages for the past 20 days. As a result, the workers are living an inhumane life in financial hardship, said Kurma tea garden president Narad Pasi.

Narada Pasi also said that a strict programme would be announced from next Monday if the due wages were not paid quickly.

Tea worker Mukta Rani Bauri said that her family members were starving for days as their ration also suspended.

Sathi Bilas said that she could not buy any food for her family. ‘If wages stop like this, we will starve to death,’ she said.

Yusuf Khan, manager of Kurma Tea Garden, said the company’s board of directors has been dissolved.

‘So, there is a problem. There will be no problem if the management council is formed again,’ Yusuf added.
