Filmmakers on Friday demanded an environment for making independent films instead of project-based films at an event titled Cultural Politic: Uchila Cinema.
The event was organised by July Ganaparisar, a platform of reviewing the uprising, at National Museum in the capital.
They also said that the deposed Hasina government used cultural activities as weapons to strengthen her regime and create extremist nationalist art in order to divide the people between 鈥榮ecular鈥 and 鈥楳uslim鈥 creating a distance between artists and citizens in the country.
They also demanded abolition of the censor board, syndicate and discrimination in the film industry at the event while Kamar Ahmad Simon read the keynote paper.
Filmmakers including Sumon Rahman, Aung Rakhine, Tasmiah Afrin Mou, Shajedul Islam, Laboni Ashrafi, Mohammad Touqir Islam, Jahin Faruk Amin, Nurul Alam Atique and writer A-Al Mamun spoke at the event which was anchored by Humaira Bilkis.
鈥業ndependent artists started to impose self-censorship on them and others became franchises of the government which created a clear distance between artists and citizens,鈥 said Kamar Ahmad Simon.
鈥楴ow it鈥檚 important to make relevant films after the student-led mass uprising,鈥 said Sumon Rahman, adding, 鈥榃e have to challenge the hegemony of the War of Independence in a post-ideology society through films.鈥 聽
Living in the hill tracts of the country as a national minority community, the overall situation is already a cinema, said Aung Rakhine.
鈥業 have come for making films, not for debate. In the hill tracts we cannot buy more than five kilogrammes of potatoes and pulses. I make films with them,鈥 said Aung. 聽
鈥楾hey placed Mujib in all even marginal icons, creating syndicates in films and OTT platforms. They also created satire and comic contents about the Enforced disappearance on the OTT platform. We need film education for bureaucrats also,鈥 said Tasmiah Afrin Mou.
鈥極ur cultural elite became the enemy of people when they ran activism for the fascist government. You cannot separate religion from language and culture. So we have to be aware of the project which creates 鈥渙thers鈥 from us,鈥 said A-Al Mamun. 聽
