Interim government’s religious affairs adviser AFM Khalid Hossain on Saturday said that the recent issue of changing the national anthem was nothing but an attempt to create controversy in the country.

‘Our chief adviser has repeatedly said that we will not do anything at this moment that might create any controversy. We are the interim government. It is our responsibility to restore the law and order situation, and ensure political stability,’ he said in reply to a question from journalists before attending a meeting with representatives of all religions at Islamic Foundation in Rajshahi.

Khalid Hossain said that if a congenial atmosphere was created in the country, they would reorganise the Election Commission and hold a fair, free and impartial election.

‘We will then hand over the power to the elected new party and leave,’ he added.

In response to another question over vandalising places of worship, the religious affairs adviser said that attacking mosques, temples, and shrines was a heinous act.

‘Those who attack religious establishments, especially places of worship are enemies of humanity. They are criminals,’ he added.

Khalid Hossain also said that they in meetings with the deputy commissioners had ensured that if madrassah students were involved in the pujas, they would also guard the temples.

He said that they would take necessary actions according to the existing laws if anyone tried to vandalise any religious establishments in order to destroy the communal harmony.
