
Dhaka stocks witnessed a decrease in its indices in the past week, after gaining in the previous week, as a section of investors went for selling shares to book some profits, market operators said.
DSEX, the key index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange, lost 75.77 points, or 1.31 per cent, in the past week to end at 5,728.65 points, after gaining 104.5 points in the previous week.
The Dhaka bourses operated in a total of five sessions in the past week, among which it gained in four sessions and lost in one.
Market operators said that investors were watchful amid the ongoing reform efforts to improve the governance of the market by the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission.
The BSEC has recently formed an investigation committee to look into activities of the Dhaka and Chattogram bourses.
Boards of some listed banks were also reconstructed by the Bangladesh Bank.
The total turnover on the DSE rose in the past week to reach Tk 3,994.06 crore compared with that of Tk 3,170.18 crore in the previous week.
Of the 395 issues traded in the past week, 76 increased, 311 decreased and eight stayed the same.
Investors were mostly active in bank scrips, followed by food and pharmaceutical shares.
EBL Securities in its weekly market commentary said, ‘The benchmark index of the capital bourse retraced to losing territory as investors preferred to remain cautious ahead of the earnings declaration season for companies with financial year ending in June.’
‘Despite beginning the week on a positive note, the market soon experienced a selling spree as investors remained watchful of the market momentum amidst regulatory efforts to address recent market irregularities, which dragged down the benchmark index to settle in negative territory with bears regaining control after a week of modest gain,’ it added.
The DS30 index decreased by a total of 10.35 points, or 0.49 per cent, to finish at 2,114.36 points.
The DSE Shariah index lost 12.45 points, or 1.00 per cent, to close at 1,228.81 points in the past week.
BRAC Bank topped the average weekly turnover chart with shares worth Tk 41.45 crore changing hands per session.
British American Tobacco Bangladesh, Olympic Industries, MJL Bangladesh, Linde Bangladesh, Grameenphone, The IBN SINA Pharmaceutical Industry, Taufika Foods and Lovello Ice-cream, Midland Bank and IFIC Bank were the other turnover leaders.
