Indian Border Security Force shot one more Bangladesh national near Kantivita border under Baliadangi upazila in Thakurgaon district on Monday.
The deceased, Jayanta Kumar Sinha, 15, son of Mahadev Kumar Singh of Fakirvita Belpukur under the upazila, is the second Bangladeshi victim of border killing by BSF members within eight days.
With the two, a total of five Bangladeshis were killed by the members of BSF in different bordering areas since the present interim government assumed power on August 8.
Baliadangi Police Station officer-in-charge Firoz Kabir said that the incident occurred inside Indian territory, about 100 yards from the border line at Kantivita, at about 4:00am.
He said that the victim’s father and another man, Darbar Ali, received bullets during the firing by BSF members.
Quoting the local people, OC Firoz said that members of Dingapara BSF camp opened fire on a group of 16 people when they were entering India illegally.
‘Jayanta died on the spot after receiving bullets. His father Mahadev and their companion Darbar suffered bullet injuries,’ he said.
He said that the injured ones were undergoing treatment at a hospital in Rangpur.
The OC said that the other members of the group managed to escape unhurt. ‘They left the body there and managed to take injured Mahadev and Darbar back to Bangladesh territory.’
He said that Jayanta’s body was in BSF custody.
Lieutenant Colonel Tanjir Ahmed, commandant of Border Guard Bangladesh-50 Battalion in Thakurgaon, said that they were in touch with the BSF to bring the body back.
