The interim government’s adviser to environment, forest and climate change, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, on Monday instructed the deputy commissioner of Munshiganj to ensure no sand dredgers were allowed to the Arial Bil.
She gave the instruction at a briefing on the Arial Bil, one of the largest wetlands in the country, organised by Lauhajang Upazila Parishad.
‘The police and administration do not know who are filling the Arial Bil with sand dredgers, it cannot happen,’ she said.
In this regard, the adviser ordered the deputy commissioner Md Abu Zafar Ripon to submit a report every 20 days.

Mentioning that the flow of the Padma River has reduced due to siltation, resulting in the canals of the region becoming disconnected from the river, she suggested voluntary dredging of the canals, as the interim government could not approve crores of budget for dredging.
Industries, housing and public works adviser Adilur Rahman Khan, Bangladesh Water Development Board director general Amirul Haque Bhuiyan, Munshiganj DC were present at the event, among others.
