At least nine people were killed and 18 others injured in road accidents in Bagerhat, Gazipur, Tangail, Cumilla and Sherpur between Sunday night and Monday.

Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported that at least four people were killed and another was injured in a head-on collision between a pickup van and a battery-run easy bike on the Bagerhat-Khulna highway in Nawapara area under Fakirhat in Bagerhat on Monday.


Among the deceased, Shaukat, 40, Masum, 30, and Nipa, 28, were residents of Bagerhat sadar. The identity of another deceased could not be known.聽

They were passengers of the easy bike. Katakhali highway police station sub-inspector Ashraful Haque said that the bodies were kept at the police station.

A garment worker was killed in a road accident on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway near Mir Ceramic Factory in the MC Bazar area under Sreepur of Gazipur on Monday, the BSS reported.聽

The deceased, Akkas Ali, 29, was a resident of Malamari village under Sreebordi of Sherpur district.

The accident occurred in the area when an unidentified vehicle hit him as he was crossing the road around 8:30am, leaving him spot dead, said Maona highway police station sub-inspector Ismail Hossain.

Two persons were killed in separate road accidents in Suvullya and Dewhata areas on the Dhaka-Tangail highway in Tangail on Monday, the BSS reported.

Anisuzzaman, sub-inspector of Gorai highway police station, said that a 65-year unidentified man died on the spot when a bus crushed him in the Shuvullya area on the highway.

In another accident, Sonamuddin, 70, was killed after being hit by a bus while he was crossing the road at Dewhata on the Dhaka-Tangail highway around 10:45am.

Meanwhile, two motorcyclists were killed after being hit by a covered van in Yasin Market area of Cumilla Export Processing Zone of sadar upazila on Sunday night, the BSS reported.

The deceased were Hasan Miah, 24, a resident of Narunda area of Tangail district, and Masum Hossain, 29, hailed from Banishanta area in Khulna district. They were workers of the Cumilla EPZ.

The accident took place in the area when they were returning home after completing their duties around 9:00pm, leaving the duo spot dead, said Kabir Hossain, in-charge of the EPZ police outpost.

The United News of Bangladesh reported that at least 17 people, including children and women, were injured in a head-on collision between two microbuses on Sherpur-Mymensingh highway in Sherpur sadar upazila on Monday,

Thirteen of the injured were shifted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital from Sherpur Sadar Hospital. Of them, conditions of three were critical.

Police and hospital sources said that the speeding microbuses collided with each other in front of a local passport office in Nabinnagr area on the highway around 5:15am, leaving all including drivers of the vehicles injured.

Later, locals and Fire Service and Civil Defence personnel rescued and taken them to Sherpur Sadar Hospital and later shifted to the MMCH, they said.
