The Election Commission has filed a petition with the apex court, pleading for allowing them to withdraw an appeal they filed in 2022 against the registration of Ganosamhati Andolan as a political party.
The EC in its plea said that they were no longer willing to continue the appeal case in this regard, paving the way for giving registration to Ganosamhati Andolan as per the High Court verdict.
‘There will be no legal bar to register the Ganosamhati Andolan as a political party,’ lawyer Jyotirmoy Barua told reporters at the Supreme Court premises Tuesday morning.
Social activist Zonayed Saki, also the convenor of the party, was present among others at that time.
‘When Ganosamhati Andolan applied for registration as a political party in 2019, the then EC rejected the application. A writ was filed in the High Court against the EC. The High Court, however ordered the EC to allow the party to register. On June 6, 2022, the Election Commission filed an appeal to the Appellate Division seeking suspension of the High Court’s decision,’ he added.
‘We hope that the EC will soon issue a notification in this regard,’ the lawyer said.
