Politicians, academics and professionals on Tuesday at a discussion said that Thoughts of Abul Mansur Ahmad were still relevant after victory of the students and people movement on August 5.

They also said that after the movement, the demand for reforms of the constitution was raised for ensuring democratic rights and building a welfare state in the country.


Abul Mansur Ahmad Smriti Parishad organised the discussion titled ‘Relevancy of thoughts of Abul Monsur Ahmed on constitution’ at Muzaffer Ahmed Chowdhury Auditorium at Dhaka University where politician and constitution expert Dr Kamal Hossain chaired.

Dr Kamal Hossain said that thoughts of Abul Mansur Ahmad on constitution were still relevant and his thoughts could be followed for bringing reforms to the constitution.

The constitution of 1972 was formulated after the War of Independence of 1971 and now it could be reformed if needed after the victory of the students and people movement, jurist Kamal Hossain said.

‘We can bring changes for establishing democratic rights of the people and bicameral parliament could be formulated,’ Kamal Hossain said.

Constitution expert Arif Khan who read out keynote paper at the discussion said, ‘We should bring reforms to the constitution of 1972 carefully so that democratic rights of the people are not hampered.’

‘For ensuring democratic rule in the country after victory of the students and people movement we must need to bring reforms to the constitution,’ Arif Khan said.

Jalal Firoz, the executive director of the Centre for Parliamentary Studies, said, ‘We can follow the thoughts of Abul Mansur Ahmad on constitution for bringing changes to the constitution.’

Jahangirnagar University teacher Miza Taslima Sultana hoped that after the victory of the movement by students and people, the democratic rights of the people would be ensured in the country.

Politician and also writer Zahid-ur-Rahman said, ‘We must bring some reforms to the constitution for ensuring democracy and democratic rights in the country.’

Writer Sarwar Tusher said, ‘We must bring some reforms to the constitution so that one could not be elected prime minister of the country more than two times.’

He called on all to work for establishing sprits of the student movement of 2024.
