Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay

Today is the 130th anniversary of the birth of one of the acclaimed Bengali fiction writers Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay.  

Born on September 12, 1894 at 24-Parganas in West Bengal, India, Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay first short story ‘Upekshita’ was published in 1921.  


Published in 1929, his first novel ‘Pather Panchali’ that catapulted him to fame still remains one of the most widely read Bangla novels. He later penned ‘Aparajita’ as a sequel to ‘Pather Panchali’, which has been translated into several Indian and European languages. Based on the novel, acclaimed filmmaker Satyajit Ray made his film ‘Pather Panchali’ in 1955.

Bibhutibhushan’s works give the readers a glimpse into the rural Bengal where nature and human life exist in a close harmony. Creepers, grass, insects and spiders, all have a place in his descriptions of nature.

His literary works include ‘Meghamallar’, ‘Mauriphul’, ‘Jatrabadal’, ‘Chander Pahar’, ‘Kinnardal’, ‘Aranyak’, ‘Adarsha Hindu Hotel’, ‘Drishtipradip’, ‘Bipiner Sangsar’, ‘Maraner Dankabaje’, ‘Smrtir Rekha’, ‘Debjan’, ‘Utkarna’, ‘He Aranya Katha Kao’, ‘Ichhamati’ and ‘Ashani Sangket’.

The fiction writer was also editor of the film magazine named ‘Chitralekha’.

Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay passed away at Ghatshila in Barackpur on November 1, 1950.
