The United States Embassy in Bangladesh, in a security alert on Thursday, said that although the situation had calmed in recent days, isolated violent incidents continued, and it remained highly unpredictable.

‘Mohammed Yunus heads a new interim government that is working to address security issues, as the Bangladeshi Army continues to be deployed nationwide and police are slowly returning to their posts,’ said the US embassy in a notice made available on its website.

There have been spikes in incidences of vandalism, arson, and assault, and reports that minority populations have been targeted with violence and harassment.

‘Although the situation has calmed in recent days, isolated violent incidents continue, and the situation remains highly unpredictable. The Bangladesh Army and Navy Facebook pages contain contact information to request emergency assistance,’ said the security alert for the US citizens.

It said that US citizens should practice vigilance and still consider returning to the United States.

The mission also suggested them to avoid demonstrations and exercise caution in the vicinity of any large gatherings.

‘Review personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates,’ the notice added.

The US Embassy in Dhaka is open for limited operations only and has ordered the departure of family members and non-essential employees.

Mission personnel still in Dhaka are confined to essential movements within the diplomatic enclave while the consular section is conducting limited and emergency consular services, according to the notice.

On August 5, 2024, the US Department of State ordered the departure of non-emergency US government employees and family members and asked that travelers should not travel to Bangladesh due to civil unrest in Dhaka during that time.

The interim government led by Professor Yunus was formed on August 8, three days after Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and fled to India on August 5 amid a student-led mass uprising.
