The government on Thursday appointed professor Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan and professor M Anwar Hossen, both from Dhaka University, as full-time members to the University Grants Commission.
After joining the offices on the day, they said that they would work to live up to the expectations of the people, students, and teachers for higher education and education policies for ensuring justice, equality and quality.
They said that they would start the process of changes and it would take a longer period to bring fundamental changes.
The Secondary and Higher Education Division under the education ministry on Thursday issued a circular in this regard.
Professor Tanzimuddin Khan told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Thursday that earlier institutions like this commission were operated by securing partisan interest.
‘As a result, currently the commission is far from meeting people’s expectations for higher education and for the commission.’
He said that the recent changes in the positions of the commission came following the student-led mass uprising with the expectations of people making this state as public interest-friendly.
Holding the expectations, the professor said that the commission would work to make the higher education public interest friendly under the leadership of the newly appointed commission chair professor SMA Faiz.
‘We were at the front of the movement as part of the University Teachers’ Network during the mass uprising and the network has its own idea about higher education,’ he also said.
Tanzimuddin said that he joined the commission to represent the collective efforts of the teachers.
‘We will start the process of implementing the ideas of different people, including of the University Teachers’ Network, for higher education,’ he said, adding that it is not possible to bring changes suddenly as fundamental changes require longer period.
Professor Anwar Hossen said that the recent mass uprising was targeted to eliminate all discrimination in the country and ensure social justice.
‘As a member of the commission, to promote a just society, I want to address issues related to the education system and the crisis in the sector,’ he said.
He also said that education policy was the main issue at present while the relevant policies should address the crisis, and different stigmas in the country.
‘The commission should focus on preparing an education policy recognising all people and their rights to establish a justice-based society,’ the professor added.
The Thursday circular read that following the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh Order 1973 the professors were appointed as full-time members to the commission while the duration of their appointments would be for four years.
After the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina-led government on August 5 amid a mass uprising led by students, the commission’s previous chairman and members resigned.
