A group of protesters, organised by a private organisation, on Friday installed a plaque naming a street near the Indian high commission in Dhaka after Felani Khatun, who was shot dead by India’s Border Security Force along the Bangladesh border in 2011.
Members of a private organisation named People’s Activist Coalition installed a signboard that reads ‘Shaheed Felani Sarak’ near the Indian high commission chanting slogans condemning border killing around 4:30pm on Friday.
A large number of army and police personnel were deployed in the area to maintain law and order. However, no untoward incident took place.
Felani, a 15-year-old girl, was shot dead by the BSF in Anantapur border under Phulbari upazila in Kurigram on January 7, 2011, when she was returning home crossing barbed-wire fences erected by India.
Her body was left hanging from the barbed-wire fence for five hours and the news sparked outrage and protests at home and abroad.
