The death toll from the September 7 explosion at a shipbreaking yard in Chattogram rose to six as two more injured workers died at Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in Dhaka early Saturday.

The latest deceased are Jahangir Alam, 48, of Faridpur and Barkalullah, 24, of Patia in Chattogram.


The institute鈥檚 resident medical officer Tariqul Islam said that Jahangir and Barkatullah died in the intensive care unit of the hospital between 6:00am and 6:20am on Saturday.

Jahangir and Barkatullah had suffered burns on 70 and 60 per cent of their bodies respectively, he said and added that two more workers who were now undergoing treatment at the institute were in critical condition.

On September 7, at least 12 people suffered burn injuries in the explosion. They were initially taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital from where eight of them were referred to Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in Dhaka for advanced treatment.

Worker Al-Amin died two days ago while undergoing treatment at SHNIBPS, the institute鈥檚 resident medical officer Tariqul said.

Two other workers, Habib and Khairul Islam died while undergoing treatment at SHNIBPS on September 11 and September 9 respectively, and worker Ahmad Ullah died on September 8 while he was being taken to Dhaka for better treatment.
