Dhaka University professor Gitiara Nasreen on Saturday said that the people of the country had lost trust in the mass media due to lack of their accountability to the readers and viewers.
‘The accountability will have to return through removing all barriers, and it is not a big task. Because, we were able to make the impossible one as possible through the student-led mass uprising,’ she said.
She came up with the remarks while addressing an event titled Mass-uprising, Freedom of Mass Media, and Publication at the Sangskriti Bikash Kendra in Dhaka.
Presided over by the ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· editor Nurul Kabir, the event was organised by the Pathikrit Foundation to remember the National University’s late associate professor Asma Chowdhury, who died in 2017.
Gitiara Nasreen said, ‘We will say about freedom of mass media when they point out talks of mass people, and the media will be the fourth pillar of the state.’
If the media, however, will not speak about people and work as a part of the state power, the demand for freedom of mass media is a demand against the people, she pointed out.
Criticising the recent attacks on shrines, she said that the main goal of the student-led mass uprising was free from discriminations. ‘But, now the attacks are happening on opposition opinions, cultures, and shrines. So, the movement will have to continue.’
‘The condition of our mass media is the same before and after the student-led movement. People were depending on social media due to a lack of trust in media during the movement,’ she added.
Mentioning about the previous sound political cartoons, the professor said that the political cartoons were absent in the past two decades in newspapers, but the cartoon had recently returned through the student-led movement.
Gitiara Nasreen also praised the new generation for the successful movement. She said, ‘We have thought they were idle, but the movement and its features like slogans and arts have proved their creativity.’
Pathikrit Foundation president Professor Liakat Ali gave a vote of thanks at the event.
