A group of female students of Dhaka University held a silent human chain amid rain demanding seats in dormitories on Sunday noon.

Around 70 female students participated in the protest covering their faces with red masks in front of the DU vice-chancellor’s residence.

The protesters were seen holding placards with messages such as, ‘We are grieving over our rights, we don’t want any more promises’; ‘VC sir, will there be a sublet at your house?’; and ‘VC sir, open the gate.’

At one point, the university authorities invited the students to discuss the matter at the Abdul Matin Virtual Classroom.

Dhaka University Proctor associate professor Saifuddin Ahmed said, ‘We held a meeting with the students in the presence of the vice-chancellor and treasurer. We informed them that seats in dormitories would be allocated fairly.’

‘It is true that there are not enough seats for female students in the girls’ dormitories. We are considering increasing the number of seats,’ he added.

He also said that as a temporary solution, the authorities were planning to renovate abandoned bungalows for the students.
