Environment, forest and climate change adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan on Sunday said that an initiative would be taken to ensure widespread use of environment-friendly jute packaging through the proper implementation of the Jute Packaging Act, 2010.

‘Meetings will be held with businesses to this end by December this year,’ she said, adding, ‘The ministry of environment will provide policy support to increase the use of jute products.’


Rizwana made these remarks at a meeting on ‘Environment-friendly jute sector and overcoming the problems of jute industry’ at the conference room of the Bangladesh Jute Mills Association in Dhaka’s Motijheel area.

She said that the jute sector was crucial for the protection of the country’s environment.

The adviser said that urgent measures should be taken to address the crisis, faced by the jute industry, stressing the need for public-private partnerships to revive the sector.

Brigadier general (retired) M Sakawat Hossain, adviser to the ministry of jute and textiles and the ministry of shipping, said that initial steps would be taken to ensure the use of jute packaging for sacks of rice, flour, and wheat.

He said that everyone’s cooperation was needed for the expansion of jute products.

The meeting was chaired by Mohammed Abul Hossain, chairman of the Bangladesh Jute Mills Association.

At the meeting, representatives and experts from various jute mills discussed the current situation and solutions to the crisis in the jute industry.

Later, Rizwana held a consultation with the Auto Bricks Owners Association.
