Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Thursday said that the interim government should rethink the decision of giving the army to exercise magistracy power across the country.
The party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, addressing a view exchanging meeting at Thakurgaon Press Club in Thakurgaon district town, made the opinion.
His opinion came two days after giving the army magistracy power for 60 days since the order on September 17.
‘I think, the army should be allowed to exercise magistracy power in the areas where the law and order situation had gone out of control,’ Fakhrul said in the meeting.
‘It would be impractical and unwise to create new problems by allowing the army to exercise magistracy power in the areas where things were peaceful and political leaders and activists were controlling the issues,’ he said.
‘I want to request the interim government to review the issue. I want to request them never to take any action that will be a boomerang for them, boomerang for the people of the country,’ he said.
He also said that ‘giving magistracy power to the army’ meant that the administration had failed to maintain law and order situation.
‘We are hopeful that the interim government will remove all the garbage, and create an environment in the country where an acceptable election will be held in a fair manner,’ he said and added that people’s parliament would be created in that election.
‘I would like to call upon this interim government to work appropriately so that we can see a real democratic state, a parliament and a government elected by maintaining democratic standards. I know my words may not please many. But, it is my responsibility to speak the truth. From that responsibility, I am uttering these words,’ he said.
He said that allowing politicians in political activities was the only solution to the problems.
He said that, after the fall of Sheikh Hasina government, an interim government had been formed with the support of everyone in the country.
The BNP leader said that the interim government was trying to hold trials in the cases lodged for offences committed by the government led by Sheikh Hasina in a short time.
‘Sheikh Hasina is the mastermind of these offences. Thousands of people lost their lives on orders from her,’ he said.
Thakurgaon district BNP general secretary Mirza Faisal Amin, joint general secretary Paygam Ali, Tkakurgaon municipal unit BNP president Shariful Islam and district BNP leaders were present on the occasion.
The BNP leaders provided financial assistance to the families of victims in the student-led mass uprising in July and early August.
